High Time For A Chuckle (or Two)

Amidst all of the angst of the sneaky introduction of the HST, the realities of Afghanistan and our own unwillingness to support and nurture democracy here at home, I thought I would share a bit of humour that came my way recently in the form of a couple of pieces in the Harbour City Star (June 4, 2010).

Firstly, in a piece titled, 'VIU Grads are ready to face the future', it is reported that Gara Preusse, computer science instructor at VIU, has said that while there are only five graduates from VIU that earned computer science degrees in this week's ceremonies, the number is expected to grow by up to 40% in the next few years. I guess this means that we can expect six graduates (+1) next year and as many as seven (+2) in the following year! This is a good example of why I always try to give both the percentage and the number when I am sharing facts with my readers.

Secondly, in a piece titled, 'People with outstanding warrants could be refused welfare cheques', we learn that B.C.'s Minister of Housing and Social Development, Rich Coleman, in explaining how a new system to see people with outstanding warrants being denied welfare payments would work, saying that only people with warrants for serious offenses, such as murder and drug trafficking, will be told to address such issues before they are given income assistance. Just imagine the scenario where someone wanted for murder walks into a welfare office and seeks to apply for assistance whereupon he/she is told to come back when they have dealt with that 'little matter'. I would have thought they would have called the police. Weird but true!
